7 Day Trip Into the Ancient Heart of Tusheti
Depart from Tbilisi by 4-wheel towards Shenako, one of the oldest villages in Tusheti, a place unlike any other. Feast with locals, following their ancient traditions, tasting the regional food made of local produce. Stay overnight at the village, in a typical centuries-old stone house, where we will sit by the fire out front watching the starry sky and the moon rising over the historical church.
Easy hiking to the ruins of the Ageurta village and nearby waterfall. Here we’ll hear echoes of epic tales about warriors, told by the great local storytellers. Afternoon horseback riding to Sanare Mountain, not very far from the Shepherd house where we’ll see the life of shepherds isolated from the world. Camp overnight on the summit, where the voices of two Alazani rivers will sing us to sleep.
Easy horseback riding/walking to the living village-museum of Dartlo, passing the ancient village of Chigo, along true alpine meadows. Dartlo is one of Tusheti’s most fascinating places, with its old towers watching over the village like experienced sentinels. Stay overnight at a local guest house in Dartlo, very close to the river. The moon light through the window will be pouring its magical light.
Horseback riding/walking to the Pirikiti valley, seeing the amazing villages of Parsma and Girevi as we travel by the open river valley and gorge between colliding mountains. Camp overnight on the river bank of Pirikiti Alazani, surrounded by glaciers. There, we will enjoy a large fire all night.
Horseback riding up to Nakaicho Pass, a gorgeous ascent to 3000 m. Lunch on top of the world! Continue across the dramatic mountainscapes of Pirikiti to the softer hills of Gometsari Valley. Stay overnight at a guesthouse in the unbelievably picturesque village of Dochu. Being there feels like standing atop an eagle’s nest.
Easy hiking/horseback riding to Omalo. Free afternoon to explore Old Omalo and its historic watchtowers. These Keselo towers are centuries old, and were restored 5 years ago; their original façade was carefully maintained. Grand dinner to celebrate our successful adventure, with Tushetian traditions of accordion playing and dancing! Stay overnight at a local home, between upper and lower Omalo.
Late morning departure from Omalo. Shashlick party with Kakhetian wine in the lower forest by a roaring river near Kakheti, surrounded by great old trees and rapids running on green rocks. In the afternoon, on the way to Tbilisi we will visit the Alaverdi Cathedral, built in the 11 th century; it is the third tallest church in Europe.
